What You Need to Know About Serpentine Belts

Serpentine belts distribute power from the crankshaft to the engine accessories like the alternator, air conditioning compressor, air pump, power steering pump, water pump, and more.

When the serpentine belt starts showing wear, you'll notice cracks and splitting along the belt. You may notice that it's slipping or hear squealing noises. If the belt breaks, it can damage the engine by causing it to overheat, cause loss of the charging system, or cause you to lose the power steering.

Be prepared. Inspect your serpentine belt and try and determine how old it is. Learn your car's manufacturer's recommendations on how often to replace the serpentine belt and take action from there.
